September Nonprofit of the Month: Playworks Pennsylvania

May 10, 2016

Happy September! This month, we’re pleased to be partnering withPlayworks Pennsylvania.

Playworks offers a proactive approach to combating bullying and enhancing school climate. Playworks’ mission is to improve the health and well-being of children by increasing opportunities for safe, meaningful play. To accomplish this, a full-time “coach” is placed at each partner elementary school, serving over 7,000 children in Philadelphia and 425,000 around the country.

Coaches facilitate fun, play-based physical activities during and after school. Each one also recruits junior coaches from their schools to serve as peer mentors. The junior coaches then help to manage recess for their younger counterparts in K-3rd grade. This promotes inclusive behavior, self-esteem, and communication skills. The junior coaches participate in after school homework help, leadership programs and learn how to lead in their communities.

In addition to all that, Playworks Pennsylvania manages an interscholastic sports league for 4th and 5th graders. This combination increases participation in academic activities by 89 percent, and decreases incidents of bullying during recess by 86 percent.

Thus far, Playworks is operating in over 20 states and is headquartered in Oakland, California–just like us! For the entire month of September, 10% of all online sales will be donated to Playworks Pennsylvania to further their work with elementary school recess programs.
